I just got off the phone with my Mom who is celebrating her 84th birthday. She is my hero, enjoying life to the fullest and kind-hearted to others. Mom was back from the gym, where she still works out five mornings a week, and preparing a hot lunch in-between phone calls from family and friends wishing her a happy birthday.

Mom told me how delighted she was to receive a beautiful exotic plant this morning from a Chinese lady at the gym. The plant, an anthurium with its dark green heavy leaves and red heart-shaped flowers, was a fitting match to the heart-centered woman who is my Mom. I asked her how she came to meet the Chinese lady.

Mom met her a few years ago when the lady came to the community fitness center where both my parents work out. Mom saw her walk over to the treadmill, push a few buttons, step off, wander around the exercise equipment with a perplexed look on her face and then head for the exit door. Mom bolted after her, stopped her at the door and continue reading “When Words Fail, Follow Your Heart”

Miriam and Howard

In the last few weeks, we’ve been catapulted right out of our comfort zones. Howard and I have had more fights and more tears than we’ve had in a long time. We’ve also had more laughs, more joining, and more passionate life energy than usual as we joined forces to write our story for a contest.

It started at the beginning of April when we entered the online Next Top Spiritual Author Contest with our idea for a book. Along with 2,800 other authors, we had to prove that we could market ourselves by attracting votes. And we did.

Now in Round 2 of the contest, we have shifted the focus of our book from a self-help spiritual guide to an intensely personal continue reading “Feel Great Naked Book Proposal Online”

Howard relaxing at Golden Ears Creek

Have you ever experienced times when everything seems to flow easily? When you feel “On Top of the World?” When money and relationships are fun and easy? When synchronicities delight you and life seems bright and meaningful?

In contrast, have you ever experienced times when your job is a struggle? When stress is heaped upon stress? When issues seem to strain many relationships? When “life’s a drag?”

Inspired Flow or Struggle – It’s a Choice

Now, which would you prefer? If you want to have more inspired flow, then you must continue reading “Miracles are Natural in an Inspired Flow”

Howard relaxing on the rocksThis morning I felt myself slipping from excitement about our book project into overwhelm. I kept thinking about all the things we still needed to do. Heck, here we are– a third of the way into this contest for Next Top Spiritual Author and we don’t even have a Facebook fan page up yet. Indeed I had only told my family, our neighbors, and a handful of people that we are even in this contest. I felt the pit in my stomach grow even deeper as I thought about all the things I still needed and wanted to do.

I Need Do Nothing

The more I worried the harder it was to get inspired. So, I took a deep breath and remembered continue reading “I Need Do Nothing”

what-if-up imageRecently I found myself committed to giving a speech I didn’t want to prepare for. I was puzzled; when I had accepted the invitation the prospect of giving this talk excited me.

As the date of the speech approached, it became more and more obvious to me that the thought of writing another speech, let alone memorizing and practicing it, was eating into my peace of mind. And yet I felt I just couldn’t bow out – others were counting on me and it wouldn’t look very good. I knew that, if I kept up this resistant train of thought, I might end up, ultimately, embarrassed and disappointed with myself. continue reading “Easiest Speech Ever (Part 1 of 2): What-If-Up”

canstockphoto0534344“I’ve had enough,” Carol exploded. “It’s been a bad week: I’ve lost my favourite scarf, my house is a mess, my teenage son is failing school, and my husband spends all his time working or watching TV.” She burst into tears. “And when I stepped on the scale this morning, I’d put on three pounds.”

Overwhelmed by the sheer pace of her life, Carol, my normally fun-loving and competent client, was at the end of her rope.

“I’m mad at myself – I can’t find any joyful thoughts,” she continued. “And now I’m worried that with all these depressing thoughts the only thing I’m going to attract is more depressing events.”

Have you ever felt like this – worried, frustrated, and overwhelmed? It happens to all of us from time to time.

When you are feeling worried and overwhelmed, you don’t have access to bliss – sometimes you can’t even get to just OK. But it takes reaching for joy to turn things around. What a paradox! So what can you do? continue reading Remedies for Rotten Moods

Lake O'Hara Hike

Lake O'Hara Hike pics by Ray & Lydia Ducharme

My sister Lydia sent me these beautiful pictures that she and her husband Ray took on a recent hike with two friends to Lake O’Hara in Yoho National Park.  The pictures are so beautiful that I look at them over and over again.

I want to be able to hike in nature, like these folks. I  want to be in great physical shape too like these folks.

But…

But… I resist walking outside in the rain. I don’t feel like jumping on the trampoline when it’s wet outside. I’m even reluctant to drag my butt off the chair and do a set of tai chi in the multi-purpose room.

However, I AM willing to move past my resistance. One powerful way to create what I want [good health and fitness] is to get into the feeling of already having it. So I decide to use these beautiful pictures to inspire me. continue reading to see how I used powerful feeling words to release my resistance

Road Atlas of Canada

There's lots to see and do in Canada

My wonderful summer was not without a few hiccups. I probably hit the low point on a family road trip through British Columbia. The cure came from a most unlikely place.

We had planned a 3 day canoe trip down the North Saskatchewan River on the August 3rd long weekend.  My husband (Howard) and son (Ben) and I were travelling through the interior of BC to meet up with my sister and her husband and others at a campground outside of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta.

After a rest stop at a restaurant in Revelstoke, BC it was Howard’s turn to drive and I got in the back seat. I had barely kicked off my sandals before he sped out of the parking lot. A moment later he was making a left turn at an intersection and my car door, which hadn’t been latching properly since a neighbour backed into it a few months ago, swung open. I quickly grabbed the door and slammed it shut and settled into a comfortable position for a nap.

Two hundred kilometers later, at another rest stop, I discovered that one of my beautiful new and expensive Keen sandals was missing; it must have fallen out when the car door swung open. I’d bought these sandals with the covered toes especially for this canoeing trip and I had no other footwear except running shoes, which needed to stay dry for our nightly camping. We couldn’t go back, we’d gone too far already. continue reading Inspiration from a Map

I believe that we are here for the joy of the journey. I am so passionate and committed to creating a delicious life from joy that I call myself the “Joyous Renegade.” My calling is teaching people how to create lives they really love by choosing JOY FIRST. If we’re not enjoying our lives, we’re missing the whole point.

Here are my own rules for creating a magnificent life with ease and joy.

letter-jJoy is the Measure of My Success

I measure my success not by the money in my bank accounts or the stuff that I have (although I like my stuff!) I measure my success by the joy that I feel. I set goals for the joy of having a direction to move towards. I enjoy the journey to my goals, whether I choose to lie on the beach or surf the biggest waves. continue reading Rules for the Joyous Renegade
